\JJim Hieronymus and I have explored all the avenues we can think of
for getting support for a robotics approach to the automation of coal
mining without success.  Unless you or perhaps Fred Crawford has some
suggestions, I am inclined to give up.  Jim will have to find something
else to do.  It turns out that NSF has no charter to do anything in
support of mining, and the Office of Coal Research is only interested
in quick payoff projects, or so it seems.
